At Yokohama International School, students explore their passions, discover new strengths, and feel a true sense of belonging. By creating diverse opportunities for learning, YIS students are empowered to be confident, compassionate individuals who can make a positive difference in the world every day.
Our Expeditions program enables students to discover, explore and engage with the natural world so they strengthen their connections to the land and gain a sense of place within it. Leadership, self management and collaboration opportunities empower students to make meaningful connections with each other, classroom central ideas and everyday life. Being mindful of the environment, students practice using the natural world for wellness as they develop an appreciation for outdoor living and a fit for life mindset.
Our inclusive activities and athletics programs enable all students to build teamwork, leadership, and a sense of belonging. The athletics and activities program offers students diverse opportunities to develop and grow in a range of areas and skills, as well as try new activities or sports while connecting with their peers across grade levels.
Service is an opportunity for students to grow as a learner and as a person by addressing real-life issues in their school, local, or global community. Following a cycle of research, planning, action and reflection, service learners extend their knowledge, skills, and dispositions by applying them beyond the classroom and connecting with others. Through service, students develop awareness, empathy, and agency while making a positive difference in the world.
YIS provides a rich tapestry of cultural engagements that bring Japan’s traditions and modern context to life. From tea ceremonies and calligraphy to community and service partnerships, students gain a genuine appreciation for and understanding of our host culture. By integrating these experiences into daily learning, each child develops respect for diverse perspectives and a long-lasting connection to Japan and the world around them.
