THE POWER OF LISTENING

By Carla Marschall, Head of School

Louis Malaguzzi, one of the founders of the Reggio Emilia educational approach, once wrote, “Learning and teaching should not stand on opposite banks and just watch the river flow by; instead, they should embark together on a journey down the water. Through an active, reciprocal exchange, teaching can strengthen learning and how to learn.” That is, by engaging in the act of learning as educators, we can better understand how to help children and young people learn. This is ongoing work, requiring us as a school to remain open and curious.

Over the course of these few weeks, I have shadowed students in the ELC, Grade 4, Grade 7 and Grade 10. I have listened to the perspectives of parents in four Parent Focus Groups. I have spoken one-on-one to more than 45 YIS staff and faculty members about our school culture and practices. These activities have been part of a process of intentional listening to connect with and understand our community.

It has been clear from these interactions what a strong, welcoming and inclusive environment we have, which we will continue to steward as we move into the future. As we move into our final week before the winter break, I want to thank you for your trust and partnership. It is only through our work together that we can make YIS such a warm and inviting community.

As we end the year and move into 2026, I wish you and your family all the best. On behalf of all of our staff and faculty, we look forward to welcoming you back onto campus on Monday, January 12th! 新年をお楽しみください。

Best wishes,
Carla Marschall
Head of School
