If, by the end of this short article, you’re interested in joining the YIS Board of Directors, that would be one of my greatest contributions to the school. If that’s not quite the right path for you, I still hope you’ll find a way to plug yourself into and participate in the YIS community, because for me the Board is just one part of this larger, vibrant whole.
I’ve been part of YIS since 2007, when my daughter (Class of 2023) first joined as an ELC student. My son is currently in Grade 9, giving me four more precious years as a YIS parent. Perhaps even more importantly, I’m lucky to be the husband of an alumna: my wife, Kaoru (Class of 1995), who entered YIS in Grade 6. Combined with her long history, it feels as though I have been part of YIS for most of my life.
The Board of Directors meets monthly to hear from faculty, the PTSA liaison, the Head of School, and various committees, and to discuss agenda items with one another. Each of us contributes our perspectives and experiences to support the school’s direction. I feel my professional background in real estate fund management and my experience growing up and being active at church help me in this role, but what I find most valuable to the Board are the diverse experiences I’ve gained through years of active involvement in YIS groups and activities.
I’ve especially enjoyed two PTSA Parent Activities groups: the Big Soccer Dragons, who meet every Saturday morning to play football, and the Happy Parents Choir. Both groups are filled with joy and energy, and they spread that spirit across the wider community. It’s remarkable to see alumni in their 30’s playing alongside elementary school parents, all building connections that enrich other parts of YIS life.
I became even more engaged in these groups after joining the Board in 2019, eager to connect more deeply with the community I now serve in a different capacity. My current term runs until 2026, but my involvement in these activities will continue well beyond that. I encourage you to consider joining the Board for a uniquely rewarding way to be part of YIS during your family’s years here. A first step might be attending the AGM in November. And if I haven’t managed to convince you yet, then I hope I have at least made you consider lending your voice to the Happy Parents Choir!
