When I first started at Yokohama International School back in the early 70s, we were not planning to be here too long as my parents were going to return to Los Angeles or Hawaii. Decades later, as my son followed that same journey, it became apparent that we were here to stay in Yokohama. YIS is the reason why we stayed for generations. Now, I am still here at YIS as an auditor in 2026.

Pictured from left to right: my son Hal Mikasa (YIS Class of 2024), my wife Marina, and me. Hal attends Hawaii University, works part-time at a local sushi restaurant on Waikiki.
The YIS board reflects multi-generational, international tapestry. Some classmates, some professional peers, and others I’ve met through board service or gatherings. This isn’t just about the past; it’s a deep, evolving network of trust and respect.
For a century, people have returned to YIS, passing down their commitment. This continuity builds a rich culture and a resilient foundation that endures. I deeply respect those who come back, decade after decade, to strengthen this school. In that spirit of harmony—chōwa—I continue to serve.
