From Grades 6 through 8, students are guided through a period of growth, independence, and deeper inquiry. Our Middle School Program is framed by the IB Middle Years Program (MYP) and powered by our commitment to whole-child learning.
Inquiry in the middle school propels students to connect personal interests with broader global contexts. Teachers spark curiosity through provocations, then collaborate with students to co-design investigations and problem-solving activities. Learners are ready to take more ownership of their progress, reflect on personal goals, and discover the confidence that comes from making responsible choices.
YIS is a diverse and inclusive environment where all identities are recognized and embraced by the community. By seeing each student as an individual who brings unique strengths to the group, learners are able to build a strong sense of identity and belonging.
Learners bring their curiosity, experiences, and perspectives to each transdisciplinary unit, guided by the MYP framework and adapted to our unique context. This approach fosters thoughtful questioning, deep reflection, and interdisciplinary connections, ensuring every student’s journey remains flexible, relevant, and driven by personal growth.
Students also immerse themselves in diverse experiences – from outdoor expeditions and service learning to arts, athletics, and clubs – developing resilience, broadening perspectives, and finding new ways to connect with the world. building resilience, broadening perspectives, and discovering the many ways they can connect with the world in Middle School.
Teachers regularly assess growth, provide constructive feedback, and guide students toward meaningful next steps. This inclusive approach nurtures both intellectual development and personal well-being, allowing every student to build autonomy, collaborate with peers, and cultivate a sense of purpose.
Middle school learning at YIS comes to life across versatile indoor and outdoor spaces. Bright classrooms and flexible hub spaces encourage everything from spontaneous collaboration to focused, individual work.
Labs and creative studios allow students to experiment, explore, and refine ideas, while the library and communal hub areas serve as welcoming intersections for sharing discoveries. Even outdoor courtyards and corridors become places to collaborate or pause for reflection. By weaving learning into every corner of campus, we promote connection, spontaneity, and deeper engagement with the curriculum.
