At Yokohama International School, our high school program (Grades 9–12) is about deepening critical thinking skills, exploring interests, and defining individual pathways to success.
We balance rigorous learning with autonomy, creativity, and community engagement. YIS high school students develop confidence, compassion, and curiosity to take them beyond graduation and into the world.
As an IB Continuum School, students at YIS are able to attain the IB Diploma, IB Certificates, the YIS Diploma and the Global Citizen Diploma. Our graduates are well prepared for higher education at universities around the world, as well as the path and opportunities they choose beyond school.
In Grades 9 and 10, students continue the Middle Years Program (MYP), engaging in interdisciplinary learning that connects classroom ideas with broader questions and contexts. By examining contemporary issues, testing hypotheses, and reflecting on their progress, learners continue to take responsibility for their learning and growth.
While all students work towards earning a YIS school diploma throughout their high school years, there is flexibility in how students go about doing this. Students may choose to follow externally assessed IB DP courses internally assessed courses, or a combination of both. Our priority is a flexible pathway — shaped by individual interests and goals. Across all four years, we emphasize autonomy, collaboration, and continuous self-reflection, guiding students to build the mindset and skills that support meaningful engagement with the world.
We believe exploration flourishes when it goes beyond the confines of a single classroom. Specialized labs, flexible hub spaces, and dedicated studios enable students to experiment, collaborate, and bring their ideas to life.
Hallways, courtyards, and communal areas become spots for impromptu discussions, while our library and performance venues invite deeper inquiries and creative expression. By turning every corner of campus into a learning space, we nurture a culture where curiosity thrives, talents emerge, and learners actively guide their own growth.
YIS graduates develop the mindset and skill set to navigate adulthood, including further education, with confidence. At universities and colleges around the world, exploring a gap year, or following alternative paths, each learner is equipped with the critical thinking, cultural awareness, and sense of purpose that stem from inquiry and inclusive community experiences. Students carry forward an understanding that learning is both a lifelong personal pursuit and a collaborative journey — values that define what it means to be a YIS graduate.
