Discover YIS

At Yokohama International School, Students Come First

Every learner is challenged and inspired by our values, holistic learning, and a commitment to our mission: Live, Learn, and Lead. Explore the core facets of YIS below and see how
students are the “why” of YIS.

Our Purpose

Everything is centered around student learning and guided by our mission to Live, Learn and Lead and our values, mindfulness, honesty, peacefulness, responsibility, and support. Our definition of learning frames our belief in developing the whole child, while our emphasis on Diversity and Inclusion allows all community members to feel seen, heard, and valued.

Our History

Founded in 1924, YIS has a century of experience in international education. Our ongoing commitment to innovation and community connections has enabled generations of global thinkers and compassionate leaders. Join us as we continue to build on our rich past and shape the future of learning.

Campus & Facilities

Every space in YIS is considered a learning space. Opened in January 2022 and designed by Kengo Kuma and Associates, our campus in Honmoku offers open, flexible learning spaces and state-of-the-art facilities intentionally designed to bring our philosophy of learning and teaching to life. The use of natural materials and taking advantage of natural light, the learning spaces create a sense of openness and that makes it a welcoming place to be.

Governance & Leadership

YIS is guided by a dedicated Board of Directors, Board of Trustees, and School Leadership Team. Together, they provide strategic direction, vision, uphold our values, and welcome the active involvement of our community to ensure the students are at the center of every decision.

Safeguarding

We place the well-being of every student at the centre of all we do. Through the application of  international standards, safe recruitment practices, and ongoing training, our commitment to child protection is woven into every aspect of school life to create a secure environment that enables all students to feel safe and thrive.
